Illinois Licensed-Credit Cost Calculator: the 36% Cap, Priced

Enter an amount, an APR, and a term; the calculator returns the monthly payment, the total of payments, and the interest behind them.

Illinois licenses no two-week payday product, so the number that matters here is what licensed credit actually costs. This calculator prices installment credit at whatever APR you enter, with the state’s 36% cap preloaded. Set the amount, the APR a lender has quoted, and the term; the result lists the monthly payment, the total of payments, and the interest inside them.

The default case is the state’s cleanest: $1,300 at the 36% APR cap over twelve months runs about $130.60 a month and $1,567.21 in total, $267.21 of that interest. Reset the APR to a bad-credit online offer at 130% and the same principal costs $198.65 a month and $2,383.80 in total; at a mid-range tribal 500% APR it is $550.08 a month on a twelve-month schedule. The 36% cap is Illinois’ 36% all-in cap’s line, and the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation licenses the lenders that sit under it.

Treat the APR line as the whole comparison. Two offers can quote identical monthly payments at wildly different totals; the APR and the total-of-payments line expose the difference in one glance. If a two-week product ever appears in an offer, that is the tell of an unlicensed lender, not a faster door.

Field notes: tribal loan questions, answered straight

How is the monthly payment calculated?
Through the standard amortization formula: principal multiplied by the monthly rate and its compounding growth, divided by that growth less one. With $1,300 at 36% APR over twelve months, the payment is $130.60.
Is a 36% APR installment the same as a payday loan?
No, and the difference is structural: an installment spreads the cost across months of fixed payments, checks the credit file deeper, and prices under the state's cap. A payday product concentrates the whole cost into one due date; Illinois licenses none.
What if my only offers are above the cap?
Licensed consumer finance lenders cannot exceed 36% APR in Illinois, so an offer above it is either an unlicensed product, a sovereign offer outside state licensing, or a misquote. The regulator's license lookup settles which, in one search.
Does this include credit union PALs?
Enter 28% as the APR and the tool prices a PAL exactly: on $1,300 over twelve months, about $125.46 a month. PALs cap at $2,000 by federal rule, so larger amounts route to the consumer finance market at 36%.
